beach kisses

I am married to color but I flirt with black and white.

I love that there was so much kissing going on. I looo-OOOOO-OOOOOVE a mom who will get in a bathing suit. Speaking of which, have you read this article from Allison Tate of the Huffington Post, “The Mom Stays in the Picture”? If you are a woman or love a woman, please do.

2009 – Here they are in 2009. I am so lucky that I get to meet up with this family almost every summer. We just had another session this August, how time flies.

I am kind of obsessed with photos taken when it’s almost too dark. I just upgraded to the Canon EOS 5D Mark III, and I can’t wait to play with it, pushing the ISO capabilities in the almost dark. The ISO functionality is so much broader than what I am used to with my beloved Canon EOS 5D. (The original gangster). The new camera feels like a beast in comparison, and I am so happy with it. But the focus is so different I am struggling a bit. Edited to add – the focus is soooo much better, but I haven’t found my groove after using the original 5d for so long. I used to use back button focus, now I am wondering if I need to. Anyone have any tips for me?

  1. Tara, These are so gorgeous. Love seeing your work in B&W, too! I’ve been thinking about making the same upgrade jump, partly b/c I read the focus is supposed to be so much BETTER. Now I am worried… How exactly are you struggling with it? Am also very excited about the new ISO range!

  2. I want to curl up inside your brain and heart and figure out how you capture this magic! Or maybe I need to win the lottery and pay you off or something. I can’t stand it. Uhhhh! Oh, and if I looked that great in a bathing suit I would wear one too. ;) What a blessed and beautiful family.

  3. I had the 5DMarkii and used BBF the entire time I had it, I upgraded to the Markiii and I loved the focus just using the shutter button, I switche back to BBF for a few weeks but I had better shots (on the iii) using the shutter button. I would just experiment and see what you like better but I personally love not using BBF anymore :) These pictures are AMAZING btw! I hope you come to the east coast someday!

  4. I have the mark III and I use BBF, and am SO happy with it. I almost feel like I can’t take a shot that’s out of focus (almost). I use the “expanded AF area” setting and pick the general area that I want to focus on and *bam*, almost every time I’ve got perfect focus.

  5. so purdy!!I also just upgraded to the mark lll and am having some trouble with the focus but I need to play a bit more, I will let you know if I find out useful. :)

  6. taaaaaarraaaaa…
these shots and family are stunning. beeeautiful. nice job. especialy the mama kisses. can i have those for my next shoot with you? and the light through the blanket of your last family? and so on and so on. you bring tears to my eyes every. single. time.
and ‘the mom stays in the picture’???!? i’m officially bawling.

  7. I read the article linked above. Very well written (said) . Altogether true. a photograph is perfect whenever it strikes an emotion with someone. Thats what pictures are about, remembering your loved ones. Not looking perfect.

    Love your work as always.

  8. Oh Tara, your words are awesome, and I love that you, photographer extraordinaire are not above asking for help navigating a new camera – makes me breathe a sigh of relief that I am always learning when I play with manual settings on my Canon Rebel as an amateur photo hobbyist. Love the natural light at the beach, the beautiful family that you have truly captured with all the love they share. Great job!

  9. Tara – I didn’t even know we had been blogged! It slipped my mind, otherwise I would have been all over this sooner :) I know, by now, you know how much I appreciate your work and how I feel blessed to have you sharing your talent and eye with me and my family. I also want you to know that I am grateful for the friendship that has formed over the years and I love the times we get to meet up, catch up and enjoy being in each others presence. Thank you again for being apart of my families memories. xo A.

  10. I also love this camera. I stuck with bbf and put it on continuous shots -the camera focuses super fast, almost before it shows it has the focus in the viewfinder. It will start to feel instinctual. (That’s what people said to me, which I found frustrating in the ambiguity, but they were right.) Also I switched the depth of preview button to al servo, so when the kids are running all of a sudden you just hold that button down while shooting (and hitting the bbf) and get all those shots in focus! Crazy. but. true.
