butterfly beach in santa barbara v.1

While we were in Santa Barbara this summer, I worked with two sisters, and photographed them at “their” special beach spot. Each of their families was so different. One had three boys, one had three girls. One traveled from Georgia, one traveled from Texas. I photographed them back to back. This sister was first.

They requested the sweet, sexy images at the end…actually HE requested, and she was totally game for, which I thought was equal parts awesome and adorable. Adorable that he wanted to get shots like this and awesome that he was willing to do it on a public beach. I love that spontaneous abandon! I mean, who doesn’t want images like that with the one they are madly deeply? But who is brave enough to do it? He was proud of her and them and wanted to go for it to celebrate their time together.

I also got to live out the fantasy of my high school self who was obsessed and whose bedroom was plastered with black and white posters of two people in love. Like this and this. Maybe everything I shoot is living out that girls’ fantasy….maybe I just got some interesting insight!

So, that was fun.

I pretty much fell pretty hard for these guys, and the ones I will share tomorrow.

And GAH, that clean Santa Barbara light…..

  1. I love it when a husband is not afraid to show is affection and love for his wife in front of his kids. I know as the kids get older they cry “DAD!” bc they might be embarrassed, but deep down, what that does for a kid’s soul to know that his parents love each other passionately….and what a great example of love that knows no boundaries.

  2. Tara, i’m a fan ! Your photos are truly amazing !!! I wish i could take pictures like you. You are so talented. I absolutely love the last 2 pictures, they are stunning, and they really capture the love and complicity between the two of them. Thanks for being such a great source of inspiration.

  3. So hilarious looking at your reference photos! I had a photo class in high school about 15 yrs back and we were asked to duplicate an add, and i picked that same one with her putting on the lipstick….. sorry, i went back in time briefly, when i saw that!!! Thank you for that trip down memory lane!

  4. By the hammer of Thor! That second last picture is amazing, sexy and so rockstar! It is on my two favourite shots from you ever…Right up there with that super cute brunette with aviator sunglasses that was making out with her fiancee on top of the old red car. I love the making out shots! Good for them to have the guts to go at it on the beach (and weren’t their kids around too?! So envious! I would die for a shot like that. So good!

  5. LOVE LOVE the last 2! So funny that it sounded like you were describing me in the last part of your post. My room was plastered with those images, too! I’ve always wanted to do a session like that, daydreamed about it! Oh, and that second poster link…that was my fav in my bedroom back in the day! ;)

  6. tara, i love the mom/dad/love in the surf shot. they look amazing. you must seriously get a sense for relationships when you take people’s photos…i bet you can tell immediately the status of mom & dad’s relationship in how they are together!

  7. Re SB shoot.. WOW and Wow and Wow… Wish I could shadow you around for a day and learn some of your more creative tricks. Love the sun flare.. I have tried many times to manage nice sun flare. Never seem to be able to get it right.

Lovely works Tara… I am sure your clients are thrilled

  8. I had both of those posters on my wall growing up!! Love these. LOVE. I already kind of want a third little boy and seeing this shoot, and this family…*sigh*. I’m already a fan of YOU, but seeing these images makes me a fan of them, too. ;)

  9. Hi world! It’s Kristin, the luckiest woman who had Tara capture my family and the love between my husband and I in a way that no one else ever could. We’re celebrating our 18 year anniversary this weekend – we’ve endured so much, and through it all, we realize the most important thing in life is family and each other. Everything else is just background noise. There aren’t words to express how much these images mean to me. Just aren’t – . Thank you, thank you, Tara. PS – isn’t my husband the sexiest man ever? :)

  10. What beautiful images of both these sisters and their families. The differences are amazing, but so are the similarities. Glad I stumbled upon this site!!!! Beautiful work!!!! I could feel the love and beauty off each picture!
