these are sooo amazing!!!i have been raving about these to all my family all day. i have a question…are you manually focusing the majority of the time on your extreme shallow dof pics or using auto focus? i just can’t seem to get the focus i want with every picture like u do. i have the 50mm 1.4 lens…the 85mm 1.8 on it’s way to my house!!!!! i just love your work tara, you’re such an inspiration

Tara, how do you get that special effect that looks like a filed out negative carrier? That funky, irregular black border? I’ve been looking to do that with my own photos and can’t figure it out. Your pictures are terrific.
Love these Tara! What a fun, retro-y location. It fit them perfectly!
Gorgeous photos! So, so amazing!
Absolutely STUNNING, Tara ♥
Your work is just INCREDIBLE, inspiring and soooo making me want to get better and take as close to as BEAUTIFUL photos as you do!!! You captured that beautiful family PERFECTLY and showed once more that the environment really doesn´t matter too much – one just needs some ideas :)

That is THE coolest backdrop ever. Seriously. I’m ready to make a trip to CA.
OMG love love love your stuff. You just inspire me in so many ways!
These are amazing pictures, Tara! Brilliant colors. Brilliant light.
You are awe-inspiring!
This family must be THRILLED!
Tara, I love your photos! I grew up in Newport, but now live in Texas. When I saw your photos from the Balboa fun zone, it brought back so many memories. I can’t wait to go back and take my own kids to Balboa. Did you ride the ferry?
Tara, these photos inspire me so much. Once I went to a well known photographer and he told me that his secret was that he looks for a person’s ugliest feature and tries to hide it (yeah, he seriously said that!). I think that the thing that makes your photos even more wonderful than his award winning photos is that you do just the opposite – you find the beautiful in people and accentuate that. I notice that often people comment that your subjects are all beautiful. I think that your subjects are beautiful, but I think that a lot of it is that YOU think that they are beautiful and in turn make them even more beautiful. Confidence is sexy. :) This is one of my favorites of your photo shoots ever. You rock, dude.
i think i could just cry. thank you for all of these you guys. seriously. almost 90 posts. i am FLOORED. thank you!!!
it was so fun to do this…i have wanted to take a family to an urban, non traditional area for a long time…but no one has trusted me enough yet to let me try it. i am so inspired by commercial images-stock images. i look on places like veer.com and getty images to get ideas and inspiration. i am hoping i can start adding more of this type of feel to my family shoots.
so i love the commercial feel of these-love that my clients arent the traditional white t’s with khakis kinda people. LOVE IT! (not that white ts and khakis are wrong-but that they are willing to think outside the box with me)
lets all keep thinking outside the box! :)
I see there are others that love that booth as well!! This is THE booth for us… every time we told the kids that we were having ANOTHER child, we’d go to the Fun Zone and after our talk, we’d take a pic of us crammed in the booth. (5 kids total) I don’t know what I’d do without the FZ!! I think that’s a better location than the Centennial Heritage Museum we were talking about…

You are such an artist. Wonderful photos, Tara.
Tears. I have tears. You so clearly captured this family, and they and your photographs are just beautiful. I can’t get over not only the variety of different shots, but that the relationships between these people really come across through the photos. (Even the cuteywooty little puggywuggies.)Just brilliant. Well done!
Ugh, ugh, um these are HOT! So many cool things about every one! I love them!
The dog shots are hilarious!
Wow! I love the photo booth–and I love your eye. Someday, I’m going to have babies of my own and I’m going to come to you for our family portrait.
You are amazing–thanks for sharing these photos with us and inspiring me daily!
xoxo.
I am freakin’ in LOVE with this family’s photos!!! Love the color, the life, the tatoos, the crazy fun they are having together…
They are like magazine documentary photos…they just have this only-can-be-totally-real feel…
