This is the superfamily of superhero blogger/jewelry designer Andrea Scher.
I had followed her blog for years and on my last trip up to the bay, I made plans to photograph them. For some reason, she was on my mind and I was moved one night to offer them a session. They were expecting their second child, and I just felt like it was an important time to be photographed, and I wanted to be the one to do it. Lucky for me, she said yes. Andrea and her boys allowed me in and trusted me with their connections and love. All of them are very comfortable in front of a camera and it was so fulfilling for me to capture such honesty and free-ness of spirit.
We hung out at home for a bit, and then headed out to the park. A normal, daily routine that they now can remember forever. I feel like the perfect way to describe them and these photos is: AS IS. They came to me as is, and it was just what I needed.
If you’d like, you can read about Andrea’s thoughts here on her blog. You can also congratulate her on the recent arrival of Nico Boon!

YES! I love it. All of it.
I absolutely love Andrea and her family. this is a perfect capture of the blessing of an ordinary day. But this reverence for the ordinary is one of the most magical gifts a camera artist can give to someone. It’s beautiful to witness.
Wonderful pictures. I love the way you described it, “As is.” That’s exactly how I wished I photographed people all of the time.
How cool! I received one of Andrea’s superhero necklaces a few years ago for my birthday and LOVE it!
beautiful, tara.
Andrea is definitely an amazing spirit. If anybody deserves a session, it’s her! Love it ALL.

how do you make every single picture you take so incredibly gorgeous?!
your talent amazes me tara.
they are a beautiful family.
tara- these are moving and wonderful.
I’ve followed Andrea’s blog for a while as well and am so happy you guys connected. Match made in heaven, as far as I can tell. Also, these “in-betweens” are some of the best you’ve done so far… :)
beautiful, beautiful session! makes me want to grab the camera, the family and run out the door. my fave’s are the the one of just their feet on the bed, and the kid’s back with a hat heading out the door.
really special set me thinks
oh, and the one with the feet and the wooden train.
Can I ask what lenses you used for this session?
Your photos are just magical. You capture families in a way that is simple, striking and moving. Perfection.
I love that shot of the 3 of them playing on the couch. So fun.
“Lucky for me they said yes.” You are SO hilarious and wonderfully humble. Like anyone would say “no” to being photographed by you!!! It’s a total dream of mine to have you photograph my family. Someday!
I’ve been a big superhero fan for years, it’s lovely you offered to shoot them!
…I LOVE these photos! Thank you…
love these! the shot of the parents holding their son’s hand- how do you get that shot? are you down flat on the ground? and just have them walk by you? love it!
you are great!
Looooove this shoot Tara. My fave has to be the couch shot – awesome.
I am blown away by your talent. I crave to see the world the way you do through your lens. It is beyond moving to see the openness, love and joy this family exudes in your pictures. Wow.
AS IS, is perfectly beautiful!
