yesterday, jeff and i woke up grumpy. our options were either get out of the house or watch our sunday go down the drain in a haze of lazy grumpiness. it was 80˚ and we had nothing planned, so why not?
“everyone get your suits on and grab a towel! dont bother to brush your hair! LETS GO!”
we got to the huntington pier and parked (barely. everyone else had the same idea as us.)
walked to the end of the pier for lunch at ruby’s diner. suffered through the hour wait by torturing my family with photos.
nate was sporting the kanye glasses – so we all had a turn.
and then we ate.
and then we played. i LOVE THESE NEXT TWO PHOTOS!
oh… my boys. the brothers. my man children. my beautiful little people.
and then jeff and i sat in the sand sharing headphones and listening to music until the sun went behind some clouds and the wind got cold and strong.
and then we packed up and headed home.
for anyone missing my twitter update in the menu at the top of my blog, jared is still working on it. for now, get TWITTERIFIC. it is an awesome program that pops up on your desktop every time someone you follow updates their status.
Weeeee! What fun. We went to Ruby’s for lunch too. :-)
i’m SOOO jealous! of your photos + that you can go to the beach in feb/march!! {high of 23 in my neck of woods :O(}
Don’t you just LOVE Southern California in the winter?

What a great day! That first photo reminds me of photographer Richard Misrach’s On the Beach series…I had seen a display of his work in Chicago about a year ago…very powerful stuff, I still think about it.
those two photos of all of the children are simply DIVINE! I see big ones coming!
OH MY GAWWWDD! That first shot id now my wallpaper. I miss the beach sooooo much.

Amazing photos – as usual :)
Love them :)
Glad you all had such a nice day!
i’m just a lurker and admirer of your photography. in my attempt to learn a bit of the trade myself, i’ve loved getting inspiration and ideas from your blog. i could not help myself from commenting on this post though. i live in utah now, but grew up in palos verdes, ca, and I MISS THE BEACH, like you wouldn’t believe. we used to love to come down to huntington and spend the same day you did there. so, thank you for taking advantage of the amazing place you live, and know that i am SO jealous of your day.
Thank you to share your warm, sunny Sunday. I miss warms days!!! Great photos!!!
amy-YES you do recognize them! hahaa
im so sorry, i didnt mean to make everyone feel so bad about their weather! honestly, when its november here and still in the high 80’s, and you guys are all cuddly and snuggly with hot cocoa and a blanket and a fire, and i am sweating my head off and DYING and the kids are going back to school with heat stroke, ill be jealous of YOU! i do know how lucky i am though. we have always wanted to live near the beach. we moved here five years ago, and i am so grateful to just be able to go to the beach whenever i want.
Raniy and cold in No CA! We moved up her 8 yrs ago and love it, but oh, 80 degrees in March……HEAVEN!!!! Love Rubys too….really loved your favorite two photos of the kids……you never disappoint. Rain predicted for No CA all week :( although we do need it and the hills are Gorgeous!
those boys = GORGEOUS.
LOVE their hair.
thanks for giving my fill of the little whitney clan!
they are ADORABLE! the ones of the 4 of them ROCK!!!!
what a wonderful day you guys had! thanks for sharing!
tara
p.s. can’t wait for some beach weather here. um in june. july and august. UGH!
love love the photos of the boys, they are great. can you share tips for the whiteness of the photo there? the white in the background reminds me of your new blog with the white – cleaness take on things.
these are amazing! I actually won Jay Reilly’s photoblog contest with the exact same photo (top one), just added a warm tone and texture ;-)
seriously! i love your photos. my husband grew up in huntington and i had to drag him in here to see these. i am in love with these photos and just like you, the last two are amazing! i would frame those babies.
Sounds waaaayyyy better than 15 inches of snow here in Connecticut…Although sledding is lots and lots of fun…
I love all the kites in the first photo!! The diner photo is so cute. The kids look like they’re all best friends. I love the little gap in between Anna’s front teeth too. Cute!!
Love the photos! My favorite is the one of the kids playing when they don’t know you’re taking the shot. Priceless…and a way you will love to remember their childhood.
Yesterday was just absolutely fabulous outside!
i absolutely love your photos and your family is beautiful & individually unique!
when my husband and i have children someday, we’ll drive over there from phoenix to have you take pictures of us just because you’re amazingly awesome!
Tara – I just love your work. Up until this past October, my family and I lived in Costa Mesa. Looking at your photos made me miss our old hometown SO much. And 80 degree?!? Jealous! It’s cold and rainy here in Reno.
drooling….
slurp….
what a beautiful life…..
I can’t even imagine what a winter like that would be. I’m totally missing out.
we did the SAME thing……but we were off 15th in Newport. It was cold later in the afternoon huh? love ruby’s, love the sunglasses!!!
Oh.. I loved the photos… and wish I had 80 degrees to enjoy. 8 degrees here this morning.
Ruby Diner! My kids loved that place (where we went after pics with you in Laguna) We even named our new kitten Ruby! Good times! :-)
p.s . beautiful pics as usual!
pretty beautiful photos for a grumpy Sunday!
I am freezing here in Detroit and your photos always take me to happy places! I’m dreaming of sunshine, beaches and flip flops with my family.
I have to say the Kanye glasses do look best on Nate.
Thanks Tara for warming up my 10 degree day!
You lucky lucky girl…
Life is good isn’t it, Tara!
I love the sunglasses collage!! Ughh…your work is so stunning it makes me want to cry. In a good way! You are SO GOOD!
How Awesome!! I will always have a special place in my heart for Ruby’s on the HB Pier. DH & I met there on a blind date 14 years ago. I miss the wonderful California weather too! You have such a beautiful family.
Simply divine! Can you share any tricks or tips on shooting in the sun? Your exposures seem so right on as if you used the sun to your advantage rather than fighting against it. Love that!
these are awesome photos; looks like you have another wall collage for your house.
Watching your kids have my childhood of Beach is tugging my heart! What a great way to grow up. Even with all those thousands of people on your sand.
