happy when decorating

okay so i’ve been able to get the girls rooms set up since the loft addition was finished on our house. my “office/crafty area” is set up too, but not decorated-i have to hang some stuff up before i take “finished product” photos. but i will, probably in late november/early december when i scheduled “no work time”. thats enough quotes, jeez.

there is something about a room coming together that i thrive off of. i LOVE the mix of colors, patterns, creating vignettes of fun little things. my entire house is based around the “does it make me happy” concept. (more quotes, sorry) at times i feel like the whole house looks like a childs version of what a grown up house should look like-its definitely casual and kid friendly!

it has been really nice to seperate the girls things into two rooms. i cant believe how much stuff we had shoved into one tiny 10×10 bedroom. they still share a dresser, a dresser that stayed in anna’s room. but all of their STUFF is happily in its own place. i loved being able to personalize each room, and finally use some of the things ive had stored in closets, waiting for this time to come.

so this is anna’s room-i found this bedding at delias.com, love the apple theme. a is for apples-and anna.

this is a window i found at an antique store in downtown orange. i strung twine and added clothespins so anna could hang her favorite things. right now she has artwork from ivy, and some paper lanterns i bought at paris to the moon.

her dresser, proudly topped with a handmade piece of art made by karen buckle. a lovely australian woman who gifted this canvas to me after i expressed how much i loved it. (she now sells prints of this design on etsy) i did not expect such an extravagant gesture-it is something i will remember always. and this painting definitely MAKES ME HAPPY.

and the dream banner, given to me by a sweet sweet client who knew i wanted one. again, never expected it and just ADORE it because of how it came to be mine.

and mckenna’s room.
bed purchased on craigslist for a mere $125. bookshelf found at big lots for $50. always on the hunt for a bargain! i wallpapered the inside with wrapping paper from old navy. quilt from urban outfitters.

artwork on the wall from the black apple, an artist selling on etsy. i have several of her prints in my house.

finally a nightstand all her own for her catalogs, lotion, alarm clock, and nightlight from ikea.

im sitting here and anna is sitting on the table next to me, her feet on my arms as i type and her fingers on my fingers. i think she is trying to tell me to get up.

  1. I saw those Black Apples immediately! They’re great!

One thing I noticed was the lack of tons of toys. I LONG for that here. We have a playroom but it has to be baby friendly right now, so most stuff goes in their rooms. On the floor.

  2. Looks fantastic, love the wall colour, really relaxing for a bedroom and all the details are perfect, thanks for the shout out and for sharing these pics. Love that patchwork quilt too and the bed, just gorgeous!

  3. Oh Tara the room looks gorgeous. I have a big old frame on one wall in the studio.. just the frame – and inside it I stick ideas, inspiration, thankyou notes from clients and lil cards straight onto the wall..like a contained mood boad/inspiration wall… love the idea of stringing accross one tho. the girls rooms look so warm and inviting and not KIDDISH.. but like the ideal childhood.. good one both you and Jeff for offering them sucha wonderful time they will remember forever.

  4. toys are in closets-except books and major favorites!
malinda-my boys room-OY-its an entirely different matter. two boys stuck in one small room. but they want to stay together, so we just do our best.

(and keep the door shut most of the time) haha

  5. you decorate similar to me,

  6. love love love it. all of it. we’re in the process of re-doing a room in the house for our two smallest daughters. i love what you did, and will definitively be referencing as we near close to actually being able to decorate. love so much that you put it all together for a little bit of nothing- i love pottery barn style, but it’s just NOT in our budget. love the wallpapered bookcase. i wonder if our big lots has that… it’s darling!

  7. Rooms look wonderful Sweetie!!!! You do know where you get your knack for decorating don’t you???
Glad the downhill spiral didn’t last to long. It looked liked you had quite a following….

I’m not spiraling downhill but I am on a rollercoaster ride of still remodeling, making decisions, stress eating can’t wait to finally decorate mode. So it was wonderful to see what you have acomplished!! If I don’t hurry up we will be sitting on the floor at Thanksgiving.

    Love you
    Mom
    Kiss my munchkins for me……

  8. I noticed the wrapping paper/shelf backing…nice job! I LOVE THAT STUFF..and i love when people say “That paper is so cool, where did you get it?” and i respond, “Old Navy!” who woulda knew… I bought every color and design. Sweetest stuff…in a clothing store! How bout that for quotes. The rooms are adorable…love the style! Well done!

  9. i friggin LOVE that apple duvet… and I completely forgot that urban outfitters has quilts! The rooms look amazing, fun, and yet they have the vibe that a kid could actually LIVE there..
    very nice.

ps- I love that old navy wrapping paper! I bought a Ton last year!

  10. ali russell-the green in anna’s room was matched to my favorite color of cardstock! which is actually a really really good idea. the first time i had done it, but will do it again.

the color in mckenna’s room is actually a vintagey blue/green-the most realistic color in the photo is the one of her nightstand-and unfortunately, the painters took my can when they left, so i dont know what the name is. it was a ralph lauren paint from home depot.

mary-the iron bed is from restoration hardware, but i scored it off of craigslist.

  11. Cute stuff, at one time you posted a website, I think barebabies or something like that. Where is it? I can’t find it and I want to look at it again. Thanks.

  12. there rooms are wonderful…I remember when my girls were little like that…I love fixing up their rooms and picking things to make it their own. They are teenagers now and have a mind of their own…they do let my play sometimes though.
    peace

  13. totally in love with your style. where were you when i decorated my daughter’s room a few months ago?!
(we went with a strawberry theme, but i’m really diggin anna’s apples!!)

  14. Ok, my favorite feature in these rooms are the fabulous framed photos of each girl! (do I sound like a suck up?!) No, really, they’re so cool! What kid doesn’t love looking at themselves, and to have personalized photos of each is just the neatest thing! The frames are perfect, and the little initial tucked into the corner the perfect addition! Lovely rooms :).

  15. Gotta give a big “woo” for Etsy!! I only discovered it this year and its really satisfying my craving for original art, and unique gifts. Christmas is definitely going to be easier this year because of it!

That bookshelf is awesome – can’t believe you got it at Biglots!!
