this last weekend i went with emily and liz to pacific beach. liz brought her niece. there were three 4 year old little girls running around and they had a blast. and even more, we had a blast watching them.
we woke up and walked to the beach one morning, not thinking they would want to get wet….what were we thinking? they ended up stripped down to their knickers and running around like little butterflies.
i couldnt help but marvel at how free they are. not worried about what anyone thinks of their bodies, of their actions, of their sounds….i love that every child has this in them. and i love even more, watching it unfold in front of me.
Wow, beautiful shots!
Isn’t it sad that we must let that feeling of freedom go as we get bigger. They can strip down like that. If a grown woman did that, well, you know what would happen, besides her getting arrested. Besides, what woman besides a supermodel would feel adequate enough in her own skin to do that, lol.
Great shots.
am loving these ones…you have a funky new lens or is that shading/shadowing photoshopped in? regardless, very cool.
So sweet. So utterly and completely sweet. I miss my baby being little like that. :)
awesome awesome awesome.
I wish I lived near the beach!
I also wish i was 4 and looked so cute in my underwear!
We are sooo lucky, what great lives we have!
I love Pacific! We have gone there all the way from snowy Utah! It has to be a bit of heaven on earth! Don’t you just want to feel that freedom again? Maybe those funny ladies with the red hats have the right idea! Let’s just love our bodies and not worry so much about the fat bulges, scars and such—let’s just be!!
Your post really hit home with me…wouldn’t it be nice to still have that freedom, to not worry what others think…

So precious. :)
i love the lens you are using!
Its minus 3 billion here – too cold to be running round in knick knacks
**envious** of your weather.
and H&M? Its such a cool and funk place for kids clothes. Im lucky we have those here but would much rather swap for the weather!!!
so well put…i love this spirit in my children so much and you have inspired me to do a layout on just that.
THANK YOU
I love these.. so precious!
Thanks for sharing

YES. yes. yes. i love how you put that. My life goal is to be able to cross out all of what society throws at us and instill what means the most in a woman..in a person…for my daughter AND my son.
I love these photos. They really make me miss the ocean! We’re going to san diego in a week so we can celebrate my daughters 5th birthday with friends and family. We’re doing it at Mission Bay, and i can’t wait!!
Tara, I love your pictures. I’ve admired your work for a long time, and one of these days I’d love for you do do our family pictures (I just can’t afford it quite yet :)).
Not to ask you to spill your secrets or anything, but I, too, would love to know if it is the lens you are using to give the effect in the first beach picture or if you are photoshopping it? I love it!
ive been using my wide angle 19-35 for my shots lately, just for something different…it does give some of the shots a vignette, and when i proofed that photo, i enhanced it by burning the corners.
Tara, thanks so much for sharing! Your photography never, ever ceases to amaze me!
Love these pictures and love how you are playing with different angels!
absolutely beautiful. love the words and those wonderful pictures.
Wow so amazing photos you have been taking. I really love your pictures. how kind of camera do you have ?
THESE ROCK… gorgeous documentation of their time together!
These pictures took me back to my childhood, 20 years ago, when I lived on the south coast of England, and could often be found running around with friends in my knickers.
What fun and beautiful pictures you took! Thank you for sharing and for reminding me of those fun memories of my own!
i was wondering the same about babies. we cherish those little rolls on them, but not on the grown-ups. lol cute pics.
Lovin’ that first one!
I see you are coming to Nashville! Can you tell me if you are full yet, and if not, the dates you will be there.
Thanks!
Shelby
Hey Tara,
I was trying to comment on your next post about new pricing options and discovered that Boston is no longer on your 2007 travel calendar! (deep sigh) What a colossal bummer! Any chance of adding us in the future? I was telling my husband how much I would love you to capture us on film, but we couldn’t afford the rate (as is true with all great things on my wish list). Feel free to shoot me an email if you get the chance! I would love to hear back from you…
Thanks,
Jenn from MA
My My Tara, I have not heard the term Knickers in so long, growing up in Scotland thats what we called our underwear! I had to wear bottle green knickers as part of our school uniform, and we did PE (Gym) in them – I shudder at the thought. great images, keep up the great work – I follow your posts daily Judy jj
these are amazing and perfect! I’m sooo glad that 4 year olds don’t care what people think. I wish more of us could be like that.
so good seeing you in CA. I can’t believe it’s been so long since I’ve been by your blog. I could just eat your blog up…truly a special treat for me each time.
Such beautiful shots (especially the last one). You’ve inspired me to take my kids down to the beach before summer ends:)
that first shot is beautiful!
