turning sharlanese

This is my friend Sharla, and her family. The kids were, um, shall we say less than cooperative? :) They were in total "we are going to play at the beach mode". And when we finished and I came home I was so worried I hadn’t gotten anything worthy of enlarging. Worried for Sharla’s sake. But I was happily surprised and found that although in most shots the kids aren’t looking at the camera, these pictures really captured what her family is right now. Hectic and fun with three adorable but slightly crazy kids. :) And that is what I strive to do. Love you Shar.

  1. I had to laugh right out loud when I saw that curly-headed little imp must have been eating sand in those shots! Looks like you did have your hands full. But no worries, as always you found perfect snapshots of life in those moments and these are so up to par with everything else you do! 2 Questions tho’ – do you shoot in RAW and edit as it comes into PS or in JPG? Do you use a tele lens and hang back or use a 50 or 85mm and get close? always a great day when I wake up and get to see a new batch of TW pics!

  2. Oh My God…I’m SO in love with the picture where he’s holding her face all serious and she’s laughing…I love it! Amazing work as always Lady!

  3. Tara, love the pics. Since I saw other photo questions above I have one too.

I have read your conversion method, but what do you do for color? USM, anything? I am new to PS & my colors need a little help. Whatcha got? :) Thanks

  4. Beautiful shots as usual, Tara! I love the one with the parents arms around each other, and the kids all sitting in the sand doing their own thing…and the shots of the curlie haired girl with sand all over her, hehe, cute cute cute. I love when you get surprised by what shots you were able to get out of it…those are my favorite kinds. :)

  5. wow…always wow with you. You know…I get so frustrated when I can’t get kids to look at me or the camera…but I always adore the shots of them looking elsewhere. Great ones here. I am so flying your way soon. :)

  7. Tara, I think every one of these photos captures real life. I used to take portraits for a company – very contrived, looking forward, smile pretty – had to get out of that. Because, photo shoots like this are what life is all about. You’ve got mad talent!!!

  8. Hey, so does my family win the award for “hardest to photograph” or what? LOL! I must face it, this is how my kids are, full of life and lots of energy! I love the pictures because this is how we are EVERY DAY. ;) Yes, my little curly does eat sand, I guess she doesn’t get fed enough at home. :)

  9. Sharla’s family is beautiful, and as always, you did an amazing job of capturing that!!

The youngest obviously got Mama’s curls. SO jealous!!

Need to email Sharla and get some more Heaven, I mean, mango lotion! ;) Thanks for the reminder!

  10. Another amazing shoot. Would you be interested in a trip to CO for photo shoots? I have told all my friends about you and they LOVE your work. One friend asked “What would it take to get her here?”. Hmmmmmmmm, let me think on that…..ask, beg, plead, whine, dine, shop, pray…..send her a ticket??? If you are interested in a little trip north let me know. We could arrange a weekend or more of work for you to shoot all my friends and their fams!! Love Ya!!

  11. Tara,
I’m a photographer from Australia, and like you, have my fair share of kids who like to do their own thing through a shoot. I sometimes walk away thinking ‘oh no, I haven’t got the shot!’, but am surprised at how their personalities just seem to shine through in the final images. Just like these photos of Sharla’s family. I don’t know them, yet after looking through the proof album, I can almost hear them giggling nervously, and having a great time. They’re fantastic photos. I love the images of Sharla and hubby.

I look at these shoots, and the ones I do, and just YEARN to get some shots like that of my family. Sure, I have hubby and the kids, but rarely any of the 4 of us. Do you find the same happens with you?

    Anyway, love your stuff!

  12. sometimes I think some of the best photos come about when we don’t expect it – when you just go with the flow of the shoot – your “eye” and your God-given talent prove that – amazing photos as always – thank you for sharing them!

  13. gorgeous shoot Tara! There’s something about a little girl with gorgeous blond curls….aDORAble! You got a TON of good stuff but I know that feeling of not knowing! Trust yourself, you’ll never let you down! ;-)
