This is the follow up post to this one, where Ryan and Amy were oh so fabulously celebrating their perfect baby belly. This one was all about celebrating their perfect baby during a newborn photo shoot. When couples choose to purchase my “Bun in (and out of) the Oven” package, I get reeeeeally happy. To get the privilege and the pleasure in joining them during part of the most amazing experience of their lives is absolutely one of the most important things I do.

I get to meet them while pregnant, expecting, some not so sure what is to come, but full of excitement and surprise and love and hope. And then to follow up just a few weeks later to see their entire lives changed for the better … forever. To see with my own eyes the love they never imagined possible just pouring from them into each other…I don’t know what else to say except I love every second.

Thank you Ryan, Amy, and Crosby for allowing me to peek into your love.

boho family • san diego newborn photographer

i am sure many of you, like me, have followed the story of boho family. if you havent, you so totally should. denise, carsten, and cedar have a magical little story to share. for you see, sweet cedar was adopted after years of trying to conceive. after years of want. years of hope. years of dreams.

i got to know denise last year, when i hired her to photograph emily and i. i got to know her gentleness, her warmth, and her unbelievable desire to become a momma. i started rooting for them immediately.

as the story of their adoption and upcoming birth was bravely told on her sweet little blog, i got more and more thrilled at the prospect of photographing them once they were together at long last. it was something we had talked about before cedar’s very existence was known. boho mommy and daddy. boho baby. and me.

• the watermelon was a boy and his name is felix. •

first and foremost, thank you SO much for all of the wonderful comments and emails i received about design aglow, and the maternity slideshow i posted. i was completely, staggeringly overwhelmed by all of it! i feel really, really lucky and grateful and just have to say thank you. the support i get here on my blog surprises me all the time.

onto felix!

this is the first time i have photographed a newborn where i just let everything i have ever seen or thought about newborn photography fall away. i was anxious about a slew of newborns i had in june and july, feeling uninspired and like i couldnt do what they deserved, and a friend told me to just do it my way and not worry about it. so thats what i tried to do. i walked in to photograph felix with my big pillow, my heating pad, and a sock monkey. but without any preconceived notions of what i should do.

when i walked in, this is what i saw. a gorgeous little boy all sacked out in his mommas lap.

we chatted for a bit about his birth, how they were all doing as a new family, and then since he was asleep, i set him up on my big pillow, on top of my heating pad and his blanket. i just shot what he did, without moving him around too much. i love these.

then tia chris and tia sandra showed up (auntie chris is my website designer) so i had to get a photo of them totally enraptured.

i asked, “how is the light in your bedroom?” “oh, horrible.” mom said. um, kathy, i think you were not quite right…

and that, is alex, kathy, and felix.

and here is the sock monkey.
