q&a | part two

question: do you have any handwritten cards or letters from your family (immediate or extended) or dear friends from back in the day?

question: if so how do you store them?

question: do you ever get them out and read them over?

Posted by: lesli streets | May 17, 2007 at 08:34 PM

i have a lot of notes that were passed between jeff and i in high school. i havent gotten them out in at least five years. i keep them in a cardboard hatbox my mom bought me when i was 15 or 16. way up high in my closet!

Ok, SERIOUS question (relatively): Are you a morning person, or a night owl?

Posted by: Sue Sykes | May 17, 2007 at 08:56 PM

a night owl, totally. i hate opening my eyes every morning. hate. so i stay up way too late, enjoying the freedom of the evening, and i pay for it every morning.

Q: Do your neighbors or people in your community know that you are this famous scrapbooker/photographer guru?

Q: Do people you don’t know come and say hey to your kids using their names b/c they “know” their names from following your blog/scrapbook pages etc?

Posted by: Leigh | May 17, 2007 at 09:07 PM

its a weird thing isnt it? i dont feel like a celeb or a guru! they see me in my pajamas everyday as i walk kenna to the bus. they hear me yell out the backdoor at my kids. i dont think they see me as a celeb or a guru either. :) a couple of my neighbors know, and the woman who delivers my mail knows, because she saw anna on the cover of simple.

the recognizing of the kids does happen. a lot of times people will say “i recognized your daughter/son first!” its pretty crazy when someone does recognize us. doesnt happen often, but whenever it does we get a good giggle out of it after. its just CRAZY that its all because of SCRAPBOOKING. who woulda thunk?

What do you do for dinner at your house? Do you cook? If so, what?

confession time: i dont cook. i want to cook. but i hate to cook. we eat out entirely too much. we need to stop. i go on binges of eating at home-cooking for the family. but i always peter out. sigh…..

QUESTION…How do you capture the spontaneous photos of your children? How do you see the extraordinary, in everything ordinary…

Posted by: Julie Winder | May 17, 2007 at 09:26 PM

i think its because i am pretty spontaneous myself. you have to know when to click the shutter. i never wait for them to look at me. im always talking to them, asking questions, making them do things that are against the rules-like jump on the bed or lick their dad…you just have to have fun and open your eyes to what you really want to capture.

i think its also that i know how precious these days are-and i want to be able to look back and remember every detail. so my drive and passion is powered by that.

Have with to agree with mommy g, would love to see your scrappin’ area. Hope you’re feeling back to your normal self soon.

that will have to be another post. i actually may have posted photos of my space somewhere on this blog. somewhere…i have my office set up in my dining room. its the first thing you see when you walk into my house. i am very “in the trenches” over here.

So, my question is this: when you are out with all your of your kids, do you ever get rude comments from people about having a “big family”?

Posted by: Kari | May 18, 2007 at 06:10 AM

i have heard it ALL. although, i have to say, it was a whole heck of a lot worse when we lived in LA. i had mckenna and drew and was pregnant with nate. pregnant and pushing around a double stroller, and then with him in the baby bjorn pushing a double stroller. it got to the point where i couldnt go to the grocery store without hearing “oh boy you have your hands full!” like every AISLE. it became an inside joke with my friends. i have gotten-“are they all yours?” “OH i thought you ran a daycare!” “do they all have the same dad?” “how are you going to pay for all of those college educations?” ” dont you know what causes that yet?” “are you planning on having MORE?”

my advice is-dont make comments on a childs size or a families size. chances are, theyve heard it all before.

If you HAD to pick between your camera and your computer and could only use one of them for the REST of your life…which would you choose?

that is a trick question right?

What are your kids’ middle names????

Posted by: Lauren | May 18, 2007 at 06:20 AM

the only one with any interestingness is drews. he is drew jefferson.
jeffs dads name is jamie. and jeffs middle name is jamison. (jamies son)
so drew is jefferys son (jefferson)
we tease him that he will have to call his son blank drewson, and since drewson really isnt a name, we call him that as a nickname.

what do you do all day? what’s an average day for miss tara?!!

Posted by: Stacey | May 18, 2007 at 06:41 AM

in between a lot of time at the computer proofing, answering emails, placing orders, printing, and surfing the web i:

wake up at 6:30 to get kenna on the bus by 7. wake up everyone else. get them out the door by 7:30. come home. get anna ready for school and take her at 8:15. then i come home and breathe. usually check email and work all morning. have sessions. pick up anna (she goes twice a week) at noon. run errands. take her to dance. or give her a nap. work some more. pick up the kids at 2. do homework. referee. go to the pool. watch them while they ride bikes. make snacks. clean up. get dinner (out, usually) i know its so bad! and get the kids ready for bed. jeff puts them to bed every night. their bedtime is 7. its what we’ve always done and it works for us. they do have to get up pretty early. thats when its party time. jeff and i jump into bed and watch tv or a movie or we talk or he plays video games and i get more work done. we go to bed around midnight and start all over again. i do most of my sessions on weekends and t/th mornings.

i cant believe i just fit my whole day into a paragraph. it seems so small written out like that but living it feels very very………BIG.

My question: How old are you?

Posted by: Andrea Shirey | May 18, 2007 at 07:27 AM

If you could visit any place that has existed in a movie – where would you go?
ie. the toy factory in Toys, or the red and green Paris from Amelie…

Just curious on your religious views.
You are my photographic hero!

Posted by: Leah | May 18, 2007 at 09:07 PM

my views are-if youve got views, more power to you! :)
just dont kill anybody or hate anybody because of it.
i personally am not a religious person. i was at one time in my life and it didnt fit. most of my extended family and a lot of my friends are though, and i love that we can all co-exist happily with our differences. i love differences. they really do make life so interesting.

  1. Tara…I check your blog everyday and wanted to thank you for sharing your life with us. I have been inspired by your photography and by the REAL perspective you give of your life. I also loved answers about your “big” family. We just found out we are expecting our fourth and have received similar comments…but hey, we love our kids! Anyway, thanks for sharing –

  2. I can relate to your comment about having a big family. I am the oldest of 6 children. My mom had me when she was 19 and was done having children at 27 so you can see how many kids fit into that small time frame. We always heard, “Are they all yours.” We even had a shirt made for my mom that said, “Yes, they’re all mine.”

Luckily for me I never felt ostracized for having a large family or put-down. It just got annoying telling everyone that yes they are all my brothers and sisters. I wouldn’t trade my big family for the world even though life was rough sometimes when we were little but it only helped me to grow into a better person and be more tolerant and understanding of others. Which seems funny now because most of my roommates were only children and I work with a bunch of only children or 2-kid families. Well, better stop rambling and carrying on.

  3. Hey Tara…

For the girl who wants the 12×12 clipboards…Oriental Trading Company sells them too for way less!!!

And, you decided if you’re still coming to TN. Please, oh please tell me you are cuz I’m getting the cutest playhouse in my backyard that you’d love to photography kids in!!!!!

  4. Hi Tara! I just wanted to tell you that I absolutely love reading your blog everday! And I have to admit I was so hoping to casually ‘run into’ you while you were in Utah last week! LOL! Also, one more thing…I was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrom and Post Traumatic Stress about 7 years ago. They were waivering on the Epstein Barr diagnosis…anyway, I just wanted you to know that I know how you feel sometimes. It can come and go, and ebb and flow. Hang in there! You are da bomb!

  5. Seriously – if you want the best Mexican food ever you MUST go to Las Barcas in Huntington Beach. Oh my god- we just flew to LA for a quick weekend and that is the first place we went the minute we left the airport. We’ve also been known to drive there from CO just to eat there and then turn around. I kid you not . . .

  6. Hey – I had/have Epstein Barr!!! Mine was active 20 years ago when I was finishing college/had my first job/planning my wedding – it probably ran fairly actively for 3-4 years. I’m not bothered much by it anymore, but also know that I have to get more rest, which really messes up that whole night owl thing! I was so grateful, though, to get a diagnosis – I knew something was wrong but it took a long time to figure it out. Hang in there and nap whenever you can!!

  7. Hey Tara —

Wanted to share my solution for the whole cooking at home thing. Dream Dinners. I go about once a month, make a whole slew of delicious dinners, pop ’em in the freezer and we are set!! LOVE IT!! Tonight we’re having tropical shrimp/scallop skewers. yum. Check ’em out!!

    Have a great weekend –
    Kathi

  8. love it, thanks for sharing with us each day. and yeah for finding out what ‘it’ is so you can deal with it and get on with living, right? have a great weekend!

  9. How fun it was to peruse these answers and get to know you!!! Love your style, love your attitude. And really, love your honest approach to both your work and your life. And really, beating yourself over take-out? My mom slaved in a kitchen my entire childhood .. the time you save by now spending it in the kitchen isn’t time lost. It’s better that you’re doing what you love and that you’re spending more time with who you love. If the kids can be a part of it in the kitchen with you so be it. Otherwise you just might have to settle on being a brilliant life artist … sorry (please I hope you sense my sarcasm… wink wink.)

  10. I meant to type by NOT spending it in the kitchen. I’m planning a talk on pulling away from “technically correct” photography to more “life” photography… would you consider speaking on this topic at all???? Just puttin’ it out there to see if it sticks. :-)

  11. Not sure where to ask the questions, but I love that you do the Q&A.
So here is a question I have for you…
Do you have a point & shoot camera that you carry around with you? If so, what one do you have?
    ~Tara from Palm Springs, CA

  12. i just thought you needed your “emily batteries” charged.: )! i’m glad you are feeling better. i enjoyed your q&a session.
the above picture is amazing. you captured a great connection. go you.
    smiles
    ria

  13. LOL about the big family comments, we have five and have heard them all, my fav is “don’t you know what causes that?” because I can retort “YES and I LIKE IT”

    shuts ’em up everytime

  14. Hi Tara,

I feel awkward asking this but I was looking for your post here about resizing pictures for blogs (How you post-process, record an action for rounded corners) and I cant seem to find it? I was hoping I can bookmark it for future reference.

    Thanks!

  15. Hi Tara,
I just wanted to let you know I added you to my blog list-I just love your updates and your photos esp!!! You’ve now inspired me for an OPAM-yea!!
I have a quick question…I know you have on your blog what camera you use—but I was curious if you took classes or if you just learned your camera and the rest is all just your great raw talent? :) I’d love to figure out better photography for my jewelry as well as taking better pics of my kids!!
    Thanks,
    Amanda
